Just before 4:00 this morning I heard my front door open. I bolted up said out loud, "Oh my gosh, I think Chloe just went outside".
Normally if my door opened in the middle of the night I would assume there was an intruder and I would send Seth to investigate but Chloe had already been in my bed twice last night so I knew she was having a restless night. Plus, I must admit that I have been hovering over Chloe a bit since Friday night so she was the first thing that popped in to my head.
I ran out in bare feet (I always have socks on...what are the odds that this was the one day the sock monster ate them off my feet as I slept?). I stood on the porch but could not see or hear anything. I walked in to the dark garage but still heard nothing. I called for Chloe and finally I heard her little voice telling me that she was looking for dainty (her blanket). I turned on the garage light and there she stood in jammies and snow boots trying to pull open the locked doors to the van.
I grabbed the keys, got dainty out of the van and tucked Miss Chloe back in to bed where she snuggled in happily and fell fast asleep but do you think I slept another wink last night?
Not a chance.
Good to know that she is not scarred for life after Friday night, but you'd think it would have put a little bit of fear in her bones.

She is a brave little thing. I can barely get mine to go upstairs-or downstairs-alone!
Oh man! I would be making serious plans to go crazy with bolts on the door to ensure she didn't get out again! Although, admittedly, I tend to be on the over-protective end of the scale. And paranoid. That's really not a good combo! I'm glad she's okay and that you heard the door!
Yeah, I don't think I would have been able to go back to sleep either. It will be interesting to see where this saga takes you ... What do we do with a child who is independent beyond her years? Love her. Teach her. and hold on for the ride!
My kids would never set foot alone in the garage at night. She must really love that blanket!
My other kids would never do these things either. Alex will not even close doors (even in the bathroom)because it makes him feel alone. But Chloe has no fear and is fiercely independent. When I told her going outside in the middle of the night isn't safe she said it was okay because there were no wolves out that night and if there had been she would have come back in. So reassuring. She is also the one who takes off her seatlbelt and walks around the van causing me to have to get off of freeways to belt her in again. She runs through parking lots and off through stores and she will talk to anybody. The other two are so me but she is all Seth and she scares me to death!
Chloe! What was she planning on doing out there? Was she going to go on a joy ride? I'm with Holly, it's time to pull out the locks!
Must be a 3rd child thing...and I'm scared to death to find out what a 4th child thing is. I had child locks on almost every door for #3, but then was locking in #1 and #2 and most of the neighbors. I've had night terrors thinking of all the help she'll be when # 4 does arrive and I totally agree with Julie love them, teach them and then I'll add my own PRAY like the devil never does!
