Weigh-In Wednesday: Pets

I keep getting word from around the blogoshere that my posts are taking days to update on other people's blog trackers. I think I may have fixed it, at least temporarily, but by the time this updates you may be several posts behind. Oh well, you should know to check here regularly. You know I can't keep my mouth shut for long.

I posted for Brittney earlier today, since I have left her sitting on deck for way too long, but then I remembered that I had not done a weigh-in for a really long time. So here it is, the first ever post-holiday weigh-in that won't have you sweating.

Today I want to talk to you about pets.

I am not an animal lover. Sorry, don't stone me. I do not wish animals any harm. I just wish that they had never been domesticated. I find it highly unnatural to have a four legged furry creature in my home. It clearly doesn't belong here. I don't know who decided otherwise?

I went through a brief phase as a child where I thought I liked cats, but I soon realized that I was mistaken. I have never liked dogs. I am afraid of them, to tell the truth.

I also have a psychological allergy to animal hair. It is not real, and I know that, but if someone's pet walks by me or sits on the same couch I am on, I will start to itch and feel dirty and gross. If the said beast rubs up against me, I will need to shower immediately to eliminate the risk of scratching all of my skin completely off. I am so creeped out by pet hair.

I am also completely freaked out by pet feces. I have said this before and I will say it again, mostly because it made Valerie laugh and I like to make people laugh, but also because it makes perfect sense to me. Imagine you came to my house and tried to sit on my couch totally naked. I would not allow it. Now imagine that you took your naked self to the bathroom and then returned with an unwiped butt and unwashed hands and tried again to sit down, and maybe even started licking yourself for good measure. I would destroy my couch, with you on it. But people let their pets do exactly that. I can't wrap my head around why that is okay. It is so clearly not okay to me. Unless I can find a pet that wipes it's butt and puts on a pair of pants, well, I just don't think we'd be compatible.

That said, I love my children. I have always hoped that they would not like animals because I have just known that there was no way I could have one living in my house. Two out of my three kiddos hate animals. Again, not maliciously, just in a these-do-not-belong-in-our-house kind of way.

And then there is that other child. The one who has had imaginary pets since birth. Imaginary pets that I was afraid she might actually see, because at three years old she would have sobbing fits when her dog, Mimi, would get out of her imaginary cage. I would try to suggest that I had found Mimi under the table and my sweet child would go berserk and tell me that I wasn't funny and not to pretend Mimi was under the table when she wasn't. Alyssa was born an animal lover, and there was nothing I could do about it.

Seth would also like a dog, a big one. His best friend growing up had a big fat fuzzy, shed all over the house Husky, and Seth wants a dog just like her. Here's the problem, the people who are home all day every day, and would have to entertain and potty train a pet are all 3 afraid of animals. It just doesn't make any sense to bring an animal into this house.

But our friends, Mike and Jen disagree with my views on cohabiting with four legged life forms, and are building a small pet shelter in their house as of late. They already had a dog and a cat, but last week they got a new kitten and Alyssa was well, smitten.

We had to hear every argument in the world for why she should get a cat, about how it would be so much easier than a dog (although she really wants a dog most), and it wouldn't be viscous, or smelly or annoying. She attempted to convince me that she would change the litter box and feed the cat, etc. Seth doesn't even like cats too much but I could see that he was semi on board with her although he started pushing for a dog. I tried again to explain how absurd it would be to get a pet and leave it home with me all day, especially since we live in a place where an outdoor pet is not an option, unless we want a dogsicle.

Then I started to think about a post that I wrote recently, about my Papa. I wrote about how he saved my cat's life even though it was impractical and unadvised, because he loved me that much. I thought about how much I love my kids, and I was left wondering if I could even continue to thrive in an environment with a pet. I do love my kids enough to make sacrifices for them, I really do. I just wondered if this particular sacrifice would end with me in the loony bin.

In the interest of keeping an open mind, we took Alyssa out to look at cats and I am not kidding when I tell you that just looking at them through glass made my skin itch. Just walking through the pet store and looking at food and litter boxes made me feel like I had been doused in kitty litter and needed to bathe posthaste. I found the whole thing repulsive, and it didn't help that there were mice and other rodents in the pet store for sale. Seriously? Who is crazy enough to pay money to have a rodent in their house? Ick!!!

We priced everything, the cost of the animal itself, the cost of food, the cost of supplies, the cost of my sanity, and then we went home and talked to Alyssa about what it would take to get a pet. How we could save, and how she would have to prove herself responsible by doing her chores and....oh wait a minute, suddenly a pet was not that urgent. For the first time I appreciated the laziness of my daughter who does not want to clean the basement, and therefore will certainly not want to clean up bags of dust and cat poo from the litter box. Crisis averted, for now. But I am sure it is only a matter of time before she asks again.

This is where you come in. How do you feel about pets? Do you have any now? Have you ever had any? What's better, a dog or a cat? Are you itchy just reading about this? I am, no lie.

Alright, have at it.

Send Alyssa on over!! She'd love our 2 cats. And--what's best--we have NO MICE!! It's the mice that are ICK. And since we got the cats--no indoor rodents. Our cats haven't used a litter box for 2 years, ever since we installed kitty door. They are indoor/outdoor cats. They are not allowed on my upstairs sofa (unless Tony has them on his lap petting them)and I covered the downstairs sofa with a sheet so they could sleep warm during this really cold spell. Tony would like a dog at some point, but that's down the road. We can leave cat food and water bowls full and leave for a week. A dog is more labor-intensive. But if you will come, I will make sure the cats stay outside the whole time--except when all 3 kids are playing with them.

The only reason we have a cat is because Ryans Mom kept bringing it over when it was a kitten and pushing it on us and telling us how it was going to die "poor thing, if only it had a home". The neighbor kids were torturing it to death, and I took pity on it. Ryan didnt want it. Madison loved it. Madison won. He was cute for a while...during his kitten years. But then he grew up and started leaving us "presents" of dead mice and snakes on the doorstep. Yes, he at least kills the mice, but I dont want to clean them up. We have been waiting for him to die off now for the last 7 years. He throws up hair balls on the carpet, pees on stuff, and leaves dismembered mouse parts all over the yard. His poop stinks, he leaves hair everywhere, and meow's when people are trying to sleep. Hes even been sprayed by a skunk. Yeah.
Growing up, I was a pet person. At least I thought I was. We had cats and a dog, (that was of course perfect) and they didnt bother me in the least bit. But that was in my parents house. In my house, I dont like it. Katelin keeps beging for a dog on a weekly basis and swearing up and down she will care for it, which we all know better. I have moments when I think that maybe if I could get that perfect dog like my parents had, it would all be good. But I pull myself back into reality and remind myself that I already have 5 animals to take care of and clean up after. Why would I want an additional smellier, hairier and less halpful one to look after?

Julie,
Your cousins understand you completely. Some of us are terrified of animals. I am way too jumpy to have a pet in the house. I have dogsat Roy's little dog while he vacationed and it scared me to death. Any sudden movement made me think something was sneaking up on me. I feel the same way about pet hair.
I was just given visiting teaching people to visit who are animal lovers. Everyone has dogs. One has 3 dogs, AND 8 or 9 cats. I am scared to death every time I do my Visiting Teaching. The dog is always interested in me and never pays the least bit of attention to anyone else. Last time it sat right next to me and stared at me.
It was awful. The cat jumped on the couch and I screamed. I'm a big chicken.
Good luck trying to convince your family into not getting a pet. My kids still want one, but I can't do it. They scare me.

I am SO with you and I AM an animal lover (except for mice and rats as everyone knows by now). I actually used to set off mouse traps when I was a kid at my Grandma's so they wouldn't die. I have been a member of many animal rights organizations in my lifetime.
I abhor hunting for sport. I despise fur clothing. I would have loved to be the Crocodile Hunter's assistant.
But, will I have an indoor pet? No freaking way.
I love cats. I would love to own one again someday...maybe. I have had some amazing cats. My favorite one was even an indoor one (this was when I first lived away from my parents because my mom never allowed indoor pets either). This cat never had accidents, didn't shed, and was so sweet and well behaved. But this does not make me want another cat walking around my house. We will not get one as long as we live in Wisconsin because I think it would probably not survive the garage/yard in the winters here and that is the only place one can live if we own one.
As for dogs... blah! I do not understand the fascination with dogs. I think most of them are cute and I'll pet one.. although I always feel dirty afterward.
But, they always seem to have bad breath, they jump all over you, bark all the time, poop all over the yard and don't bury it so you have to clean it up, and get hair all over. Yuck. I don't need one more thing to clean up after. I see so many people in my neighborhood and all over town with dogs and I don't think I have ever seen so many pit bulls which is just unimaginable to me... but as long as they don't attack me and I don't have to live with them to each their own.
So, there you have it. I love animals and yet I 100% agree with you. Just because Alyssa is an animal lover does not mean you need to let one invade your home. Take her to the zoo. Take her to the aquarium, etc.. When she is older let her do what I did as a teenager and volunteer at an animal hospital. There are many ways to enjoy animals without owning one.

I'm just envisioning myself sitting naked on your couch, with that unwiped butt! GROSS!!!! Oh, and I've got to stop checking your blog when I'm working, because I'm laughing too hard.

I was just about to say maybe a cat someday, but after reading Heather's comment, I think we can stick with fish. NEVER a dog, no way!

We have an English Bulldog, a toad we rescued at Grandma and Grandpa's in Santa Clara, and we just got a new kitten the day before Christmas Eve. :)

I love my dog, but he is big and stinky. He is AMAZING around my family. Lazy and can be, never bothers the kids-my little two literally use him as a stepstool, but when other people come around-he acts crazy! He is not being mean, but he just wants TOO much attention, and he starts jumpking like crazy.<---That drives me nuts!

Then I got my kitten. I think I like him more because we get to interact with him more. He is small enough to really play with. Technically my dog is amazing b/c he is just like a shadow. He just follows me where ever I go and lays by me feet (no couches, no beds, never up on anything). BUT, becasue of that, it doesn't feel like much interaction. My cat does get in crazy moods, and he gets a little annoying when he is fiesty, but my kids LOVE him (Kaden is VERY nervous around all animal) though. Just the other day Ryder told me, "Mom, I had NO idea that having a cat would be THIS much fun! It is SO fun!" It made me smile.

As for my toad, he is an ideal pet. LOW matienence. We toss a few crickets in each week, and change his water (which he poops in-which in return makes cleaning up after him a lot easier). He doesn't smell. His tank stays clean. He is quiet. And, we take him out acouple time a month to watch him hop. No dirty booty on the carpet here. Two thumbs up for a toad! ; )

Oh yeah, and ALL my kids help with all of our pets. Every morning someone feeds the cat and someone feeds the dog. My dog also poops in one spot in his gated in kennel along the side of our house. It makes clean up a lot easier, and his poopie does not take over our yard.

I love "Dogsicle" and "Smitten with the Kitten"! LOVE IT!

I love love love animals. They are so none judgemental and they are so dependable. My husband on the other hand hates hates hates animals. So you can see our impass. Of course I can't disagree that we don't have the money to properly provide for an animal right now. So we are without. But I told Corey I always wanted my own dog, and so one day I will get one. It will be when the kids are older and hopefully Corey is bringing in more money.

I love HUGE dogs. They don't yap at your heels, but they are strong and protective. I have my eyes set on an English Mastiff as soon as I can. Huge yet not so hyper dogs they are great family protectors. So I have to say sorry to the pet haters and right on with the pet lovers. They don't call them man's best friend for nothing.

Julie, once again, I'm right there with you. I wish animals no harm and I acknowledge that they can be a wonderful companion for others. I was always terrified of animals as a child. I wouldn't go to my friend's house if her cat was on the porch. Michelle used to let cats crawl all over her and she was in heaven. I would hide in the bathroom with the door locked. I used to hate walking home from school for fear that I might meet a dog. I had to get over my fear of animals on my mission, and I think I managed fairly well, but now that I'm back on my own turf, it's back to business. I feel like I have a secret peace treaty with animals: we have to leave each other alone with mutual respect. Whenever one of my sisters or brothers gets a pet, my line is always "Well, it's been nice knowing you."
The nieces and nephews love to call me up and tell me that they are getting pets, just so I can say my line. The good news is that you can come and spend the night at my house anytime you want and it's completely pet hair free with 100 percent of hands washed after bathroom visits. Phew.

You already know that I feel quite the opposite from you (hence, your mention of us in this post). I will say though I'm not just any animal lover, if that makes sense. I'm quite picky about what animals are allowed to live with us. Personally, I've never been a dog liker (I won't even try to use the word "love" when referring to dogs), but I lost out when Mike decided we were going to have a dog (yes, he got the dog with major objections from me). I don't mind petting and being a friend with other people's dogs, but I do think they stink, leave a residue on my skin where I pet them, and leave hair everywhere. I can't stand the barking either. It drives me nuts that Lucy has to bark at everyone that comes to our house.

With that said, I do love (some) cats. Again, I'm picky here. I don't like outdoor cats because of all the dirt and disease they bring inside and possible strange animals they come into contact with or kill. I don't like male cats (well, not to live with me) because they have a tendency to spray, if not neutered, and pee around the house to mark their territory. I don't like cats to have claws; I think the reason(s) can be left unsaid. I also don't like cats with short hair. I think I'm kind of allergic to them because I get itchy eyes after petting a short haired cat. I also think short-haired cats shed EVERYWHERE. If I'm going to get a cat without all of the above, then I actually prefer an indoor, female, Persian/Himalayn cat. Like I said, I'm quite specific in my choice of cat. I'm convinced that Persians or Himalayan cats don't shed as much, or if they shed it's done differently. Julie, let me ask you this, you've sat on my couch several times, have you ever left my house with cat fur all over you? If yes, then I'm truly sorry. If no, then that may help explain their different shedding patterns. When Lily sheds, it's more in a bunch that's easily seen and can be thrown away quickly. If we brush her regularly, she barely sheds at all. We always had a Persian or Himalayan when I was growing up. I attempted a non-breed, long-haired, indoor cat, and I didn't like him one bit. His hair shed differently (all over the flippin' place), it was a he (don't know what I was thinking), and he was WILD (he chewed up all my wire on my electronics and ate things out of my garbage). My preferred cats are always so lazy and cuddly, and that's all I require of a cat. My cats wouldn't know what to do with a mouse or bug (maybe bat at them a little, but then walk away unamused).

Ok, one quick story. We were selling our house in NC, and the buyers were so picky and kept coming into our house to measure things, inspect things, etc. At closing, something was mentioned about our having a cat. The couple was so surprised that we even had a cat because they saw no traces of it (even though the covered litter box was in the laundry room). The wife went on to tell me that her husband was so allergic to cats that he can't even enter the premises where cats reside, and he never showed any signs of irritation on the numerous occasions they spent time at our house. We've had other friends who are supposedly severely allergic to cats tell us they were never bothered when they came to our house. I don't know if it's because we keep our house clean or if Persians are somehow different in the cat species. Who knows!

I could go on and on, but there's no point. I realize I'm not going to change your views on cats (or any animal, for that matter). Good luck in convincing Alyssa that she can't have a cat. Mike's mom never allowed animals either, and now every single one of Mike's siblings and him all have 2+ animals (mostly cats). Do tell Alyssa that she can come over anytime to play with our Sadie, so that she can get her fix:)

Ha, I didn't realize I'd written an encyclopedia on why I like cats. Sorry.

MUST LOVE DOGS, my motto. Dogs, cats, horses, had them all, loved them all. They are always happy to see me come home at night whereas my teenage children used to sigh and say, "Oh no mom's home now we have to clean up." I can't believe my nieces don't like animals, can they forget the fun loving Skipper who had his way with Steven at one family party as Steven was crawling around on the ground playing with him. To this Steven just replied, "He likes kids". Yes, he did, a lot.

I'm with you. I'm itchy just reading this. My kids go through different phases of pet desire. Sometimes they love dogs and sometimes they're terrified. But Annabelle really wants a horse. We told her our yard isn't big enough so now she wants to move. The last time she asked for a pony we got her a goldfish. The first time my husband went to change the fishy's water he put the fish in a mug! Disgusting, right? We threw the mug out after that incident, but now I can't drink out of any of it's sister mugs. I can still see that goldfish swimming in my breakfast mug and it still grosses me out.

Okay, I along with probably EVERYONE else who read this post laughed out loud and pretty hard when I read the part about sitting with and unwiped butt on your couch... that was HILARIOUS :) As for pets, I dont mind outside dogs, but i HATE cats, I think they are prissy, and just annoying. I hate those little things rubbing against me... I know this sounds SO mean, but I just want to KICK them when they do that. I guess i dont mind when they are kittens- to LOOK at, but thats about it. Well, puppies are different. I think certain ones are SO cute and others are so freakn ugly and yes, GROSS. But like I said, dogs belong outside. I dont like my food with pet hair and other such pet things in it... so they belong outside.

Ryan wants a dog SO bad right now. Great just GREAT. So when he gets back to work, i will have TWO children at home. No thanks, I'm good with JUST Max :)

Just spent the night trying to keep Heather's cat (Heather no longer lives at home - don't ask me why we still have HER cat!) out of MY bed. After having this animal in our home (Brent always said NO ANIMALS IN THE HOUSE - which worked with the dogs, but when the girls came along, somehow we were blessed with goldfish and a rabbit and now a cat), for over nine years, we are faced with the reality of what to do with her?

I actually love cats. Always have. I could be really harsh about getting rid of her if I didn't. But if I could go back to the day Heather looked at me with her big brown eyes and begged to bring her in out of the cold, I would have said, "Tough. She can be a catsicle."

So we have a declawed, hysterectified long haired white cat who sheds daily all over everything and makes my daughters-in-law itch but delights my grandkids (when we can trap her long enough for them to pet her). And Heather doesn't want us to get rid of her - keeps promising she'll find an apartment that will allow pets, but I don't see that happening in an eternity.

So who feeds the cat and who cleans the litter box every night and who bathes her and combs her and tries to keep the cat hair at bay along with all the construction dust? Well, I guarantee it is no longer Heather. Actually, it really never has been her.

And who loves to have her curl up on my lap and purr on a cold winter night? That's my pay back.

We not only don't have mice, but I have seen her attack and eat many a spider.

But we really do have to get rid of her. Brent doesn't want any new furniture as long as she's around to shed all over them. But how do you get rid of an animal that has blended into the home for ten years? (But as far as the naked butt goes, cats do cover their butts with their own kind of pants - it's called a tail, And they wipe with their own tp called a tongue - just don't ever kiss their mouth!)

This has been a very rambly weigh in. Summarized I would say there are some benefits to pets but when the downsides seem to outweigh the benefits then it won't ever work for that family. You are justified in pushing for a dog in the backyard once a year.

Now that's a thought: a pet rental company - rent the animal for however long you want and then return it; or rent to own if you end up not being able to bear the parting.

Seth and Julie said...

Wow, I think the pet haters won this one. Maybe I just surround myself will people who have the same OCD issues that I have.

Kory, I can't believe Corey doesn't want a dog. Seth thought Corey's dog was perfect. She scared the heck out of me.

Jen, just so you don't panic...NO I do not ever see cat hair on me at your house. I forgot you had a cat because I have never seen her.

Leslie, other people's pets always bother me too...can't they see I'm not interested? And can't the owners see me throwing up in my mouth? Rude!

Erin, I have stories about people's pets from my mission. When I read your comment I was telling Seth about all the crazy cat people I met (one guy had 42 of them in a one bedroom apartment), and the dog who smelled like sewage and licked my open Book of Mormon and how it stunk for a year after that, and that page was all crispy. Yuck. Just telling him the stories made my body crawl with nastiness all over again.

Anyhow, thanks to everyone for playing. I must remember to do these weigh ins more often because I always get such fun long comments.
