My biggest blogging regret is that I didn't start sooner.
After we finally got a digital camera, I failed to back up pictures after uploading them and when our computer died we lost a whole years worth of pictures. Alyssa's whole second year. Boy oh boy, did I cry over that.
While I can't go back and relive all those unphotographed moments, I can at least attempt to document some of what I did capture. Old memories and photos, that may not be recent, but really do deserve to be on the books.
But for today, let's start with me and Alyssa. Miss Alyssa is changing right before my eyes lately. She is suddenly way too cool for me. I admit to being a little spastic and making up lame games to play, like booty wars, where you have to run around and try to tag people with your butt. I know that I have major "embarrassing mom" potential, but until now all my kids have played along with my silliness. Lately, when I am up to my nonsensical shenanigans, Alyssa asks why I am so weird and leaves the room. She is also saying I love you less and less. It is excruciating. I will say, "I love you Alyssa" and she will hug me and giggle and then run away. Is she really already old enough to be over me? There was a time when we were each others whole world. She adored me. I thought for sure she would never outgrow me. I miss her. So when Seth keeps telling Alex that he doesn't have to say he loves me every 6.3 seconds, I keep telling him to please just let him. I don't know how long I have until he is over me too.
There are not very many pictures of me with my kids. I am almost always the one behind the camera. That is okay with me (most of the time) but as Alyssa changes I do wish I'd passed the camera off to Seth more often.
I do have a couple of us together when she was a newborn, but my scanner seems to be sound asleep right now. Here are some taken after we went digital.
First day of Kindergarten. Again, she was so attached to me. She was excited during the weeks leading up to school but when we got there, she begged to come home with me. Me and Seth stayed for awhile, but eventually decided that we were only making it worse. As we were leaving the building, the principal, who had heard the commotion from her office, was hurrying down the hall to help.
Easter 2006...another BAD goiter day.
I am just wondering why no one told me to do something about that hair...cut it, dye it, brush it, swim in some Frizz-ease, shave it...SOMETHING. I mean, really people. I was 6 months pregnant with Alex in that picture. I will use that as my excuse.
Here we are heading off to Alyssa's preschool Mother's Day program in May of 2007.

That was fun. I love to reminisce. I already have lists of fun flashbacks for you.

Oh! I love seeing pictures of her so small! They are so cute! Those pictures from the booth are great. I dread the day when Abi realizes what a weirdo I am.
Oh, Julie, I feel your pain. One of the hardest things to go through is watching children need us less and less. We should be cheering them on, and we do, but there is a part of our heart that just doesn't want to - really can't - let go. Heather, our babe, just hung around forever. Even in high school she always acted excited to see me. But when she let go it was like being cut from the heart. I think the gradual pushing away is a little easier way to prepare for the inevitable fact that they do have to grow up and leave the nest eventually.
This was a really sweet post about a very beautiful relationship. She will always love you, even during those times when she would never admit it. (The booth pictures are a treasure, aren't they?)
(Also, thank you for the post on my blog! It means a lot to me.)
What a great idea for a blog post. Thankfully, I've always loved photography and got my hands on a digi cam just about as soon they were invented and had one before Annie was born. I also got my blog up and running just a couple of months after her birth, so I've been able to document all my girls since the beginning. Fortunately, you've got a scanner, so I would just scan in as many pictures as you can and do these "vintage" posts to kind of make a digital scrapbook for your kids.
Love all those pictures of you and Alyssa. It's fun to see her as a wee one since I've only known her since her elementary school years. Alyssa still adores you, but she's now learning to express it in a different way. I have the same fears that my girls will suddenly be embarrassed by me, but I know they will always love me no matter what. They have to, IT'S THE LAW...LOL.
Cute post! I REALLY want to get my computer up and running so I can hop on the Friday Flashback bandwagon. :) I think it's a great idea. Getting old pictures and scanning them sounds like a challenge, but a fun one.
I have "gaps" in my pics as well. First, was when Kaden was about 2. ALL of our cameras (digital, regular, and DVR) were stolen while we were at Disneyland. I know, happiest place on Earth, sucks, right? Then right after Grayson was born, we only had the laptop, and we had not backed up the pictures before it was stolen (Hubby left it at work, and then it was gone). I was SO sad, but we do have what's on the blog. And, one day, I will hound all my family for any pictures they may have from that window of time. And now, b/c my blog's down, I have not snapped nearly enough! :) I need to get my computer up and running and get back on track.
I love those younger pictures of Alyssa. SO CUTE!! Keep them coming!!
Oh my gosh, I love her! I totally remember that night in Balboa when she wore my shirt. The picture of her as a baby (the one with your hippie hair) makes me excited to have this new little one, I love that age where they are squishy little babies!
You don't still have that dead computer laying around somewhere do you? Jonathon can usually (through some sort of magic that involves taking the computer apart and putting some of it in our computer and some other something or the other) get pictures and data off computers, even if you can't get them to start. If you do save it and next time we get together (What are your plans this winter? Easter? We have NO plans until the **maybe** GW trip to the dells)and he can try a few things.
Katie, I hope you get your computer up soon too...and please do jump on the flashback wagon. I would love to see pictures of your kids from before blogging.
Val, She wasn't that little in that picture. That was right after her second birthday. I like when they are teeny tiny like your little girl will be in about 2 days. I am so bummed out that I have to wait a few months to come and squeeze her. Oh, and I should give proper credit, because I do think you encouraged me to cut that mangy hair before Alex was born. Thank goodness.
Sarah, We don't have that computer anymore, but we had it worked on extensively before we gave up. The guy who worked on it for us was able to retrieve a few things, but most of it was lost. I haven't printed a picture in 5 years and even though I have them backed up on discs now, and on an external hard drive, I still worry about it happening again. However, with or without that computer...we would LOVE to see you guys!
Oh yeah, I forgot that your kids stay looking like babies for a while...I totally thought that was a one year old. It funny cause Luke always looked like a mini grown up (or at least that is what people say). I wonder if the new baby will look like a little lady.
When you mentioned no one urging you to change your hair I was actually thinking that either me, Kelly or Kristen probably said something. If not, mom surely would have...nobody in this family holds their tongue much!
Valerie, I wonder what she will look like too. I am picturing her looking like Alex. Only with hair...like you looked. But then sometimes I wonder if she will have red hair. Audrey sounds like a red head name. I can't wait to hear which name you choose.
I think mom liked my hair like that. It was long, and lighter. I am sure she would have told me to throw on some mascara though.
I LOVE THIS POST! And your hair was beautiful...never seen it so long. I just can't see Alyssa with that chubby face, it's adorable! My favorite pics are your filmstrips! LOVE them.
Really, so young and already pulling away. It breaks my heart to hear that mostly because I see it in my future. Love all your pictures esp the filmstrip. Priceless!
I love seeing the pics of you and Alyssa together. You're both so beautiful. I also love the filmstrip pics. I've never done that with the boys. I'm thinking it needs to go on my list of important things to do.
I wish our kids could stay young forever. NO FUN!!
btw: I didn't even notice the goiter until you mentioned it. I'm guessing it's like my double chin that I HATE in ever picture and can't imagine anyone not seeing past it.
