We started out at the bay, as usual. Alex was having a surfing class that day and even too cool for school Alyssa was excited when she got in to his class. I love when they have fun playing together.
During surfing class Valerie was also giving scenic tours of the island.
In the afternoon we took the ferry over to the waves for a bonfire. This was the number 1 thing on my beach to do list. We were planning to go to the OC Fair on Thursday night but on our sisters bike ride along the coast on Wednesday I could smell the intoxicating combination of the ocean and bonfires. Remember how I once said that the smell of a bookstore (coffee and paper) was heaven? Well the smell of ocean and fire is right there with it. I convinced the group that we had to bag the fair for the fire. A beach fire is one of my favorite things in all the world.
Notice how Alex is now facing the ocean in this next one? Seth said he was going to pee and wandered off by the ocean and then was gone for 20 minutes. I wondered allowed where he went and if he had gotten dragged out to sea. I am a little paranoid and my son is a chip off the old block. Before long he was hysterical...sobbing and screaming for his daddy. He kept saying, "I don't even know if my dad is dead." I felt terrible for opening my dumb mouth and we were all very relieved when Seth returned. Turns out he was just walking along the shoreline.
He took Alex off to talk and look at the ocean until he calmed down.
This was definitely one of my favorite nights at the beach, but as you may have noticed by now, they all were. We went back to the beach house and watched Gabby Douglas win the individual all around and I am sure we stayed up late snacking and laughing at something or another.

This was a great night. Hightlight was singing, "who stole the cookies from the cookie jar" and when it was Audrey's turn to reply she just said, "I want those cookies"
Tell me again which island? Just looks like a dream vacation! Not having grown up anywhere near the ocean, I shouldn't have memories of beach bonfires, but we had them on the Snake River, of all places, up in Lewiston and your post brought back all those fun memories. It's been forever! What an awesome and fun day.
It broke my heart that Alex was so worried... I know exactly how he felt, though. Totally empathize.
Ok, all this time spent on the beach has made me officially jealous. You guys sure didn't miss any opportunities. I've never been to a bonfire on the beach, but I always thought it looked cool when I saw it in movies. So cool that you guys did that.
Your family vacations are so much fun. Will you pack me next time... please?
teh beach pics are perfect and really need no explanations. love the kids playing in the water and the grins on their faces. mmm, bon fire sounds scruptious too! love the kids hoodies. what a fun 3 weeks you guys had!
There are so many great pics in this post that I don't know where to start. I will say that the pic of Al and Luke facing the ocean is for sure going on my wall.
This looks like such an awesome vacation. Love beach fires! I miss the beach!
