On our second day it was even colder than our first day. I keep hearing how hot it is in Utah and wondering how they are having record breaking heat and we have been looking at high 60's/low 70's all summer long, aside from one hot week in the 90's. This day we didn't even hit high 60's. It was 62 and raining. So do you let it change your plans or do you just push forward? We decided to just push forward.
After breakfast at camp we made a pit stop (ha,ha, accidental pun) at a Cherry Orchard. One of these years we will go picking but once again we decided we didn't need a 10 gallon bucket of cherries so we just sampled everything in the store and bought a couple pastries a piece and ate them for lunch.
They have some games and a bunch of cut outs but we posed in all of them last time so I quickly got bored with pictures and we just played without documenting it.
The next thing on our agenda was Washington Island. I almost wanted to revise the agenda because the only thing we really like on the island is the beach and it didn't seem like beach weather but we decided that the boat ride would be fun even if we ended up turning around and riding right back to the peninsula.
We drove on to the ferry and had to laugh as our GPS allowed us to drive right on to the water and even outlined our path to the island. Shouldn't it shout out a warning or something before you drive into water?
Since it was raining we mostly hung out inside the cabin.
Alex did not want to stay inside so he dragged Grandpa Tony all over the boat and up and down stairs all through the trip. Tony is always a good sport but I figured he didn't need to be run ragged on the way home too so I brought a deck of cards in to the cabin for the return trip and Ann and I played cards with the kiddos.
At Schoolhouse Beach, which you have seen in past years but I will remind you that there is no sand, only smooth limestone.
See how bundled up I was? And I was still a little bit chilly, with the rain and being surrounded by water but the fun loving, or maybe just crazy, members of our group went for a swim.
Look at all those raindrops on the water.
Alex even swam under water! Brr!
Grandma gave rock skipping lessons and most of us stayed ashore and tried our hand at that. I got a D- but I was happy to even get a few to skip.
Grandma bringing Alex ashore to get in to warm clothes.
Doesn't this look like perfect beach weather? What's funny is that everyone agreed that the beach was a blast and we had the whole place to ourselves.
The only other place we stopped at on the island was at this cute church.
When we got back to camp Seth decided it was time for the torturous tradition of climbing the tower. I hate this tower. It is a wooden tower built 80 years ago and the stairs are not solid so you can see down the whole time you are climbing. I have forced myself to the top twice and chickened out twice. This time was one of the chickening out times. Alyssa didn't want to do it either so we went up one flight and by then everyone was far enough ahead of us that we could bolt back to the bottom without being pressured to keep going. Thankfully Tony had a camera up there because mine was in my pocket, 75 feet below.
Our brave climbers.
Same crew, different view.
And some bozo who thought standing on top of the tower was a good idea.
For dinner that night we went to Pelletier's for the Fish Boil which has also become a tradition and Alex must have said the words fish boil 100 times per minute during the trip just to make sure we didn't forget to attend.
After our delicious dinner we stopped to enjoy the sunset at one of the lookout points in Peninsula State Park on our way back in to camp.
And of course we had a campfire every night but I think this was the only time I ever moved more than 6 inches away from the fire so this will be your only campfire shot.

It is crazy. All of our Wisconsin summers where I hardly ever left the air conditioned house because of the heat and humidity and our first one away you guys get fall weather all summer. Dang! :)
That island looks fun.
The church looks like an old Norwegian church. So pretty.
The picture of Seth on the tower reminds me of those pictures on Pinterest that say "And this is why women live longer than men." :)
Cheryl, I have actually thought of you this summer. You picked the wrong year to trade WI for UT. I feel like we always have cool summers here though. You needed to live by the lake. It is always 10-15 degrees cooler here than where you were. But we did have another summer like this one while you lived here. In 2009 I have pictures of my kids in winter coats on July 1st when the highs were in the 50's. It hardly ever got above 70 that year. I actually do much better with the heat here than the crazy oven hot dry stuff in Utah/Arizona/Nevada but I know you hate humidity. Anyway, that church is a replica of an old Norwegian church and I have never seen those signs on Pinterest but yes, men are insane sometimes. I am glad I was not up there to see Seth pull that stupid stunt.
Another full day. Where do you guys get all that energy. That's too bad it rained, but at least you got one full day of sun and pretty! I guess I somehow combined your two Door County posts when I commented on the other because now I see you climbed the tower in this post. Oh well, I'm still amazed at all you guys are able to fit into a couple of days.
