Today we received word from the one school we were still waiting on. You know, the one where I thought we had our best chance because it is grades 6-8 only? Turns out I was wrong. Alyssa is wait listed at #114. Yes, that is a 3 digit number.
As I have called and talked to the different schools I have learned that they have had an unusually large number of applicants this year, probably because so many people are dissatisfied with the multi-grade family style teaching that they have tried this year in the district. I have heard rumors that they may be doing away with that method shortly, fingers crossed.
For now we will hope for a waiting list miracle. I have also thought about trying to get in to another middle school in the district but I am not excited enough about any of them really. So Alyssa and I have talked lots and lots about e-school. Everyone I know who is doing e-school is so happy with it, parents and students alike. She told me that she wants to try it (especially since her best friend is going to private school and won't be with her anyway) but is afraid that she will miss people and she wants to try out for cheerleading. That one threw me since she has never danced or cheered or shown any interest in any thing like it. BUT what I guess I had been forgetting to tell her is that e-school kids are still allowed to participate in extra curricular activities. Can you even try out for cheer in 6th grade? We couldn't, but whatever. The point is, she will still be eligible for cheer or music or anything else that the school offers. You can actually even go half e-school and half brick and mortar school if you want so maybe we will even look into doing some elective subjects at school and do all the core subjects at home. Once she had all the info she actually got pretty excited about e-school and at least for the moment she thinks it sounds awesome.
I know I have some family members who are super critical of this decision and you are entitled to that opinion, but at the end of the day they are my kids. We will leave the two younger kiddos at the Elementary School and we will probably apply at the Charter Schools again the next year, but for the 2013-14 school year, e-school is looking pretty likely for Alyssa.

I think that sounds like the NEXT BEST DECISION!! Of course, the BEST decision would be for her to come out to WY and spend next school year!! We did offer--just sayin'! and the offer still stands--
Exactly...you're kids, you're decision! That sucks about all the charters, but I'm glad Alyssa is pumped for e-school now.
I really think e-schooling is gaining huge popularity around the nation. It seems especially suited for students who are self-starting and above average - which fit Alyssa perfectly. I'm glad they allow the student to mix up their day and do a little bit of both types of classes. That seems to be the best of both worlds. Not sure why anyone would be concerned that it isn't a wise way to go, unless they just don't know all the details yet. I've seen many bright teenagers graduate from high school with an Associates Degree - mostly from taking advantage of e-schooling.
She can come to CA, I think there is an opening at Glenn's school.

Want to know the weirdest thing about your offers? I went online and found that the middle school in safe happy Green River WY, has the same exact low academic rating as the middle school I am avoiding here. So, I thought that the middle schools in Downey would be unspeakably bad, but they actually have higher ratings than even the "good" middle schools here. I know you have to live in and area and talk to parents and students to get a real feel for a school but still, who would have thought?
