Didn't See That Coming

Last week we bought new living room furniture. We have a loveseat and a chair, so seating for 3, with a family of 5, and if we have company, well forget it. We have needed this for over a decade and we were so excited to finally save up and not have anything else break so that we could make it happen. But then as if on cue, the water heater died and had to be replaced last week and my purse had to get stolen, just to make sure the bank accounts ended up completely empty.

As long as nothing else fell apart I figured we'd be okay. So imagine our delight when we opened a letter this morning that informed us that our home owner's insurance is dropping us if we do not REPLACE our WHOLE roof. Of course they assured us that they are understanding and they know we didn't plan for this so they want to give us ample time to make arrangements and take care of it so they are giving us until February. What a relief. I am sure $10,000 will fall right out of our rotting roof in the next 3 months.

Now you do know that I am being sarcastic and not whiny, right? I get that this is just a dose of life but it did leave a whole new burden hanging over my head today, literally. But it is what it is and I can't change it, so I tried to put it out of my mind.

Then this afternoon I received a call from a police detective. He wanted to follow up and see if the GPS location of my purse ever changed. It did not. He asked what time I was at the store and said he was going to go watch the surveillance footage from the store and then go check out that address again since the first time they went it was 1:00 AM and they didn't talk to anybody, but that these cases go unresolved most of the time so not to get my hopes up. I had long since given up the hope of getting anything back. I didn't even know the police were still working on the case.

A couple of hours later he called again and 5 minutes later he was at my door with my purse. Seriously! Can you believe it?

The family that had the purse said they found it in the shopping cart and there was no way to identify who it belonged to so they kept it. I beg to differ since my license and my checkbook have my address on them and my phone has my home # which I was calling them from every 5 minutes on Saturday night, but whatever, I was just relieved to get my stuff back.

As I went through it I did find that my make-up was gone but so what. My sunglasses are broken, but again, so what. All of my cards/license were removed from their sleeves and just in a big stack so they were clearly gone through but they are all canceled now anyway so it's not that big of a deal. My phone was clearly being used, if not as a phone, for the apps and internet, which still worked with wifi. There were several new pictures on the camera and it was charged, even though it was only half charged when I lost it. And then I noticed that my checkbook and my house key were still missing. I usually don't have a house key in my purse but Chloe was carrying one around so I took it from her and threw it in there. I called the police detective back and told him what was missing. He went back to their house and tada, my checkbook was in their car but no house key so I will be changing my locks. They claimed that they tried to find a # in my phone and called my contacts but the phone logs do not show any outgoing calls, only 100 missed calls from my home # and they didn't speak English well enough to understand all of the questions the police asked, like why didn't you just take the purse back in to the store??? It doesn't really add up but it does give me peace of mind to have my stuff back and have a police record of who had it. I am so glad that the police stayed on this. I was impressed and surprised at how much attention they gave to one lost purse and I am extremely grateful.

My new phone is already here and all my bank cards are already canceled but now I do not need a new license and it is always good to avoid a trip to the DMV, I do not need a new Kindle, or a new wallet, or a new purse, and mostly it is just nice to have all of my personal identification back in my possession instead of wondering where it ended up.

So today was a day of things I didn't see coming, some good, some not so good but I was reminded today as I am everyday, that someone is very aware of me and all of the little hiccups and happinesses that life throws my way. The roof is just a roof and while it is frustrating, I trust that we will get through it.

Holy cow. That is great that the police followed up on that. I am so glad you got it all (mostly) back. What a crazy experience for you to have to go through.
Sorry about the roof too... but you have such a good attitude about it.

Seriously have never heard of an insurance company making those kinds of requirements. Do they go out and visually inspect every home? I guess if they are requiring it, replacing the roof now could save you a lot of heartache down the road. We were very happy to have that project behind us a couple of years ago - replacing even the wood under the shingles. We found an area above the kitchen that had been ruined from a leak we didn't even know we had. We feel like we've got a solid roof for a few years at least. Just wondering how they expect you to get it done during this terrible weather time of year you're going into. Replacing roofs is not something you do in blizzards.

I am impressed with your police department! Kudos to the officers for following up on it. And hooray for getting part of your life back.

Sounds like you'll have plenty of opportunities to wear out the new couch over the next few weeks, too. Looking forward to seeing photos of people sitting on them! Can't wait to get new ones (after we get the frontroom painted and new carpet and new doors and tile in the entry and...and..well, it may be a while).

So it seems bad news followed by good news followed by bad news. I have to say I was a little relieved to know that others are not having a breezy time with things too. I always tell Corey why us, and then he just looks at me and says this is life. Glad you at least got most of your stuff back. Sorry about the roof. I hate roofs, they always seem to be the worst. How did they know you needed a new roof unless you called for an inspection? That does seem a little odd.

Cheryl, I definitely have a whole new respect for the police department(s) here is these two towns. As for the attitude, I am not excited about it but I have learned that freaking out everytime something breaks hasn't helped me to fix any of it. Plus, we have replaced everything in this house and yet the value still goes down every year so I guess I have gotten used to it and feel like this is just the way it is and will be.

Kory and Julie, Yes they did come inspect my home. They do it every couple years. The house is 20 years old too, which is about the shelf life for a roof, especially when you live in a place with lots of wind and snow.

But Julie, I agree with you...they want me to fix this in the middle of winter? Ridiculous!

And Kory, I think everyone has their "stuff" in life but most people keep things more private than I do. I feel like if we all have to go through it we might as well go through it together.

Well, I had a sucky weekend. If you read my blog you know why. We have the worst luck ever. I feel we are going to be in an aparment forever. BUT Branch and I kept telling ourselves this weekend how lucky we really are. So very blessed and so are you even though life sucks a lot. They didn't tell you that when you are a kid and want to desperately grow up.

Anyway, love you. I know everything will work out even though right now it sucks real bad.

Emily, I totally get wanting your own place but renting does have some advantages. We lost money selling our first house and this one goes down in value constantly and we are dumping lots of money in to it every year. If you rent and something breaks it is someone else's problem. I have friends who have lost money on houses so often that they rent now and refuse to ever own again. Just telling you all of this because you said no one tells you how tough it is to be grown up, so I am telling you that the grass is not always greener as a home owner...it has it's pitfalls as well. Have you seen the sign at the end of Splash Mountain that says, "you can't run away from trouble, there ain't no place that far"? So true. Everytime you graduate from one phase of life, the next brings all new challenges but we really are blessed with so much along the way if we keep our eyes open and are willing to see it. Good luck with the car and getting in to a house. Keep trusting the Lord. There are things He needs us to learn and His timing is always right in the end. Hugs!

Wow! I can't even believe it. Any of it. The fact that they "found" your phone. That they couldn't "figure out" how to return of it. Using the phone. Missing key. It's all crazy! AND I can't believe you got it back! That's better then nothing at all, but it is all still so outrageous. :-/

Sorry about your roof.

When our other house needed a new roof several years ago, we had a whole bunch of priesthood brethren show up on a Saturday with hammers. The lumber yard delivered the shingles, even conveyer-belted them onto the roof (they are HEAVY!!), then in a few hours had a new roof!! Might want to see if the priesthood could help with yours! Would save you thousands of dollars. I'm glad your stuff is back, but it's still pretty creepy to know they went through everything.

Amazing that you got your purse back, and especially that the police were wiling to follow up with your case. Some of my faith is restored in that big city Kenosha;) We, too, were told that our roof can't be insured in its current state. We had some leakage, and Mike just last weekend replaced the roof over our mudroom where the leaking was occurring. However, we'll have to replace the whole dang thing next spring/summer just for safety reasons. I'm praying that our house in Kenosha doesn't pull the same thing before we try to sell. We REALLY can't afford to that, too.

I can't believe you actually got your purse back! Impressive! Sorry about your roof, I can completely relate to how frustrating that is.
