One-Eyed Julie

I am sitting home from church, typing this with my eyes closed so we'll see how it goes. Remember I said I cut my eyeball? Well, I really did.

See...

That is not the best picture (taken on phone) and you may or may not be able to see the tear or lumpy gooey tissue around it? Luckily I have small squinty eyes so most of that is not visible to the people who have to look at me.

On Wednesday I opened my front door and it was windy (it is always windy!). I felt something blow in my eye and it hurt, but it happens all the time. I thought about going in to remove and clean my contact lens but just rubbed my eye a few times and headed off to back to school shop.

Wednesday night my eye felt bruised and was bloodshot. I took out my contact lenses and figured we would be all clear by morning.

Still bloodshot in the morning. Oh well, I figured if anyone noticed it would just look like I had been crying about the first day of school.

Thursday night there was swelling and I could see what looked like a tear in my eye and maybe the start of an infection. But because I hate to go to the doctor for any reason I kept waiting for it to go away. I even kept wearing contact lenses because my glasses are a really old prescription and have been sat on by my kids a handful of times. I tried to get new ones last year but my eye doc said NO. He said he wants me to get Lasik and not spend money on glasses. I assured him that I would love to get Lasik if insurance covered it (and I actually think they SHOULD if you are legally BLIND, like me, but that is a soapbox for another day) but that I wanted glasses in case I ever needed to remove my lenses. He still said no.

So I was trucking along with my bum eye when I woke up on Saturday and noticed that I couldn't really see out of my left eye. I called Nurseline and chatted with my Nurse mother in law via text message and was told to go get it checked and not to drive. I was supposed to go to a Primary baptism and had to pass my duties along to LeShel so I could get to a doctor where I learned what I already knew. I tore my eyeball and then it got infected. The retina is good though so they told me to see an eye doc ASAP to see if they want to stitch the tear. I had no idea they stitched eyeballs and I am pretty sure we are not going down that road since only the white of the eye is affected.

So I am applying my ointment which makes me completely blind in one eye and trying to function on one eyeball. I kept trying to get ready for church today and struggling so Seth finally patched my eye and told me to stay home. I may never show my face again now since I left LeShel flying solo in Primary today. I am afraid this weekends flakiness may be perceived as an attempt to get sprung from my calling, but I promise it is not. Church is fun if you are in Primary. The last thing I want to do is get sent back to the big kids table. Oh and speaking of the big kids, I am FINE. This all sounds more dramatic than it really is. If any of you send the Relief Society anywhere near me I will hunt you down. I feel fine and if anything I am ashamed that I let this dumb thing keep me home. I mean, what if I was permanently blind in one eye. I would learn to cope and I wish I had coped better today. I am so not looking for attention. I hate attention! Just documenting for my posterity.

And now I think I will post something else so this post gets buried from view as long as any bad closed eye typing will be forgiven.

That looks miserable Julie. You were not kidding or exaggerating, were you? Eyes hurting are the worst! Get better quick!

I had something scratch my eye once and it about killed me! I dont know how you walked around like that for how many days until you went to see a doctor...3!? To be honest though, I probably would have waited too. No worries about skipping out on primary stuff. Good thing you have counselors that rock and can cover for you. Feel better soon!

LeShel, Thanks for your understanding. I like what you said in your e-mail about not feeling guilty or you will have to feel guilty if you get sick. I am okay with other people having issues but feel guilty if I do so it is good to remember to cut myself some slack. I still feel like a flake though.

Val, Leave it to you to laugh at me. You should see it now. I have two patches on it and even more tape because I keep trying to open it and we are trying to force it shut. The patch seems to be helping and now I wish I'd gone to church with a patch on to amuse the kiddos.

Julie, It's not too bad, just awkward mostly and definitely better today than yesterday so yay for that. I can't read very well though and that is HARD for me. So grateful fo my sight now and for contact lenses.

Heather, You are the one who is not alloweed to miss Primary. When you were in Utah this Summer me and Raylene decided that. I feel bad now for the times we have asked you to conduct because you are SO busy on Sundays. We kept botching up roles and all kinds of stuff without you. I trust that any of you could single handedly run Primary but with Raylene out of town today too I was just worried about who would take care of Mikey. I wanted to see the new Bishopric sharing time/scripture time too. You guys will have to fill me in on how it went down.

Oh no! I'm so sorry, but I did like the patched eye picture though. I love having those things to look back on. Plus, Valerie was right. I totally see Alyssa too! :)

Ouch, that really is awful! You were wise to get yourself to the doctor. Hopefully, you will recover quickly. I'd say you were entitled to a day of rest and absence from your responsibilities.
