All American 4th of July

We celebrated from sun up to sundown and beyond on 4th of July! Don't you love 4th of July? No expectations, no presents, no preparation. You just get out in the Summer sun and party somewhere.

We started our party at church for the annual Boy Scout Pancake breakfast, which Seth started in our Ward incidentally. He is no longer involved in Scouts but we always go show our support and eat mediocre, I mean delicious, food. I did not manage to snag even one picture this year. Don't worry, there will be plenty of pictures in this post to compensate.

After breakfast we drove around to look at how the clean up is going since the storm. Here are some pictures from right by my kids' school.

Me looking embarrassed that Seth made me pose with this tree.

Next we were off to Milwaukee for the Brewers game, because is there any more American way to spend the 4th than at a baseball game? I think not. Seth and I have been to a couple Brewers games, but Alex is the only one of our kids who had been. He couldn't wait to go back. Chloe was also thrilled because Chloe is our good time girl and she loves to be out anywhere. Alyssa kept saying she didn't get baseball and didn't care to go. I promised her that after the game she would be singing a different tune. Even if you don't like sports, the baseball game is fun. I went to so many games as a child (Angels and Dodgers) and even before I cared about the game, I always had a blast. So did Alyssa. Who wouldn't love a day full of sunshine, hot dogs, cotton candy, soda, and peanuts?

Miller Park, beerville itself, somehow manages to be the most family friendly ball park I have ever been to. There are so many fun activities for the kids, and the mascot slides down a big curly slide which Chloe loved. She watched Bernie Brewer all game long. And then of course there are the sausage races which I recorded and the kids are still watching over and over again. We had a ball and of course we can't wait to go back. It was even a pretty exciting game. In the fourth inning the pitcher hit a grand slam with 2 strikes and 2 outs. The Pitcher!?! It sent everyone in hysteria and gave us a nice lead, but sadly we fell on our faces in the 9th and walked away defeated. Boo!

I love the Brewers logo. I think it is cute but not until a year ago did I realize (when Seth pointed it out to me) that the glove is made up of an M and a B. I love it!

The kids peddled to make the sausages race. Alyssa, as the Polish sausage, won her heat. Looks like all that bike riding paid off.

In our seats. We actually got up and wandered around some more after finding our seats since we still had an hour and a half until game time.

$1 hot dogs!

They have a playplace but Alyssa was too tall and Chloe couldn't go in because she didn't have socks on. Don't feel bad though because Seth took her for Dippin Dots while Alex played.

Getting ready for the sausage race. In the gift store they have a t-shirt for each sausage and since there are 5 of them and 5 of us we were going to buy all 5. We ended up not buying anything since the store was too crowded after the game but we assigned each member of our family to be a sausage. Alyssa is the Polish. Alex the Italian. Seth the Chorizo. Me the Hot Dog and Chloe was absolutely unianimously the Brat. And now I have the BEST IDEA I have ever had, so don't you dare copy it. We should be the racing sausages for Halloween. I am not sure if everyone in the family will go for it, but don't even try to tell me it wouldn't be the coolest thing EVER.

This picture is for my family who will find it amusing that the seventh inning stretch includes a few rounds of Roll Out the Barrel.

We got out of the game at 6:30 and headed straight home to see the fireworks show over Lake Michigan. We usually do our own fireworks at home but decided to check out the big stuff this year. There were thousands and thousands of people down there. Thank goodness it is one big lake. The show was pretty good and we especially liked the fireworks that were shaped like stars and happy faces. Very cute! We had heard that getting out of there was a nightmare so we packed up our chairs, and blankets and bolted for the car when it was over before anyone else even had time to stand up. It still took about 20 minutes to get home (usually about 5 minutes) but I have heard of people getting stuck down there for hours, so 20 minutes wasn't too bad.

Waiting for the show

I am looking like I have had a long day at this point.

By the time we got home we were all partied out, but it was such a great day and one I will remember, hopefully forever.

Here is Alex racing Corey Hart. When you hit the end of the run you are supposed to hit the wall so it clocks your time but Alex ran right out the other end and off through the park, and even though you can't see it, that is why you hear me laughing.

Here is the sausage race with my crappy camera work. Chorizo won!

looks like the perfect 4th! SO much fun. We hit the lake this year too fireworks. SO glad we went. It was a blast. I'd heard getting home was impossible. Took hardly any time at all. Definitely worth it.
We played too hard on the 4th, sun-up to sun-down and on the 5th I was pretty sure I had a hangover. Still totally worth it!

That game does look like fun. Doug and I were talking about it that day and thinking that is something we need to do with the girls sometime.
I wish we had gone to the lake! I was really thinking about it but I was pretty sure I would have had to go alone with the girls and that coupled with the fact that Maddy started having the sniffles made the decision for me. Maybe next year.
I love your Halloween idea. That would be hilarious. DO IT!
Your tree pictures are amazing. I am still in awe over all these trees that were ripped right out like that with the ground up with them. Crazy.

Ditto on Loving 4th of July. I don't remember not loving it when I was young, but being older it is a great holiday. I really started to tear up as I saw the fireworks at almost every house celebrating our freedom. And a baseball game! How fun. Another perk of living in (or close) to a big city. I've been to several Dodger games and I agree there is nothing like being at the baseball field.

Great 4th! Looked like a blast. I love all the fun at the baseball field, and that Halloween idea is hilarious! You should totally do it. :)

As for the tree, freaky! I'm glad Seth made you pose because it gave me a real understanding of just how big that tree was. So crazy.

Agree with Katie - had no idea just how big those trees were until I saw the picture with you next to it. Kind of humbling, isn't it, to realize how much we are in God's hands.

What a fun fourth for your bunch, however! The ball game looked like a blast - love the picture of the kids all on separate balls. Cute! Can't wait to see your crew all decked out as sausages for Halloween, too. There is, admittedly, a need to share fireworks with the community. Makes them ever so much more fun!

Katie and Julie, It is hard to capture the damage with my tree pictures. There were over 50 down in my little neighborhood alone, just 5 streets wide, and then the damage continued all the way up the shoreline. 1000's of trees pulled up. One person was killed by a falling tree which is awful, but I am shocked that more people were not hurt. There was no tornado siren or warning. No rain and blue skies leading up to the storm so no one knew to get inside until right as it happened. Trees were down across roads all over the place and I can't believe more people/cars did not get hit. And then just a mile West no one even knew anything happened. Way too weird!

The pictures of Chloe wanting the popcorn and then getting it are the BEST!! I totally pictured the racing sausages different when you described it to me. I was thinking they looked just like sausages and not guys. They are funny, I like them.

I can't believe we both had our best ideas ever at the same time and they were both Halloween costumes. Cross country mindmeld...

Was Patty there to sing, "Roll Out the Barrels?"
