I am a huge fan of trunk or treat. I have been known to raise my fists and fight at the suggestion of getting rid of trunk or treat. It is the best. Everyone comes. Everyone has a blast. This year did not disappoint. My chili lost this year, but so what. There was so much cuteness all around me. I love being able to see what all my little Primary friends dress up as, since none of them live in my neighborhood.
And most of all, I LOVE dressing my kids up. I don't know why I get such a kick out of it, but it is one of my favorite things to do all year. This year, all my kids chose their own costumes. I loved when I used to be able to talk them into whatever I wanted them to be, but you know what? I think they looked their best this year. So without further ado...
Alyssa chose to be a witch. I thought it was so cliche, but I let her look at every witch costume in the world and bought the one she chose. Even though EVERYONE is a witch, I am not sure anyone has ever done it quite like Alyssa did. Holy gorgeous!
Alex wanted to be a Superhero, but I told him I would like him to go without a mask this year so that I could see his face. We found a compromise, and from yesterday's clue you probably already know that he was Superman....
Or was he???
This next picture gave us a brilliant idea for next year...Ralphie from
A Christmas Story. Couldn't you just see Alex's little face in that pink bunny costume? I am pretty sure we'll never talk him into that one, but you know you'd love it if we could.
This costume was one of my favorites EVER. The costumes at church this year were about the cutest I have seen. I saw so many kids who could have easily taken the prize, but Alex won first place. Yay Alex! They didn't skimp on the prizes either. He took home two movie tickets and a gift certificate for a whole pizza. How fun!
Seth decided to copy Alex and be Clark Kent for work today. I was asleep when he left, and when he came home I was staring at him and trying to decide how a pair of glasses made him look so different? Then my mind finally landed on what was really amiss. He shaved his goatee. I didn't mean to, but I reached right up and slapped him. Not hard, just a shocked swipe on the cheek. He knows how much the goatee means to me. The kids are not happy either. We are all grateful that we are just days away from No Shave November.
And now on to Chloe, the monarch butterfly. Here is the costume I originally ordered for Chloe.
I was so excited, but when it arrived the tutu did not even cover the leotard. The headband just had two pipe cleaners glued to it and they were about to fall off any minute. The wings were rolled in a ball and I could not get them to stand straight.
A few days later I found another butterfly at Marshalls, cheaper than the first one. I grabbed it and mailed the other one back. The new one reminded me of one Gymboree did a few years ago, so I found the Gymboree tights on ebay to complete the look. And voila...
I think this was my favorite set of costumes yet. Of course I say that every year. I wish I knew of something Halloweenish to do tomorrow so that we could wear them some more. I was the only one in my family not in costume. I thought about going as Lois Lane, but couldn't think of how to make that a costume. I did paint my nails orange and purple to match the girls, and because I am super proud that I quit biting my nails three weeks ago. Yay!
In case you are wondering about the purple and black hairspray, it comes out of their hair pretty easily. Getting it out of the bath might be another story.

Alex's costume definitely was the winner of the night! So clever, and the died hair and glasses definitely completed the look. The witch costume was the best/cutest I've seen. The patches on the hat made it that much more unique. And, of course, the purple hair was AWESOME! I'd be worried though because it seems Alyssa liked having her hair a funky color a little too much. And Chloe was the most beautiful monarch butterfly I've ever seen. You must buy her some headbands because that is her look!!! She can become obsessed with them like Mimi;)
I think now that Seth has a bald face, he should try out a bald head, too.
I loved your kids costumes! I told Doug Alex should win so I'm so glad he did!
But- I have to say I thought your other kids should too. I was a little disapointed that ALL boys won and they were all around the same age. I was hoping that they would have a baby prize (which should have gone to the little smurf!!!) and a younger child prize (Chloe!) and then Alex's as well as a little older prize... but ... I agree with you they did a great job on prizes this year and the decorations were so much fun!

I did not recognize Seth when I saw him. It took me a minute and Doug had even told me that he had shaved. I said, "Oh my gosh, I wonder what Julie did ?" So that's funny that you slapped him.

Jen, I thought Alex had a shot, but I am SHOCKED that Smurfette didn't win something. I wanted to claim Violet as my own in that costume. Also, to be honest, I liked the purple hair on Alyssa too. I thought it was pretty. As for the bald head, we will get there soon enough and truthfully, I think I'll take the bald head over the bald face. Some people just look good with facial hair. Alright, I better get back to degrossing my house now. I am finding black and purple spray paint on every surface I wipe down.
Hey Cheryl, We must have been commenting at the same time. I wish they would have had a girl prize too, and I just commented, but I will say again that Violet as Smurfette totally should have won something. All the kids looked great this year. It was a tough call. I am just glad they let them parade again. Last year they didn't do the contest and I love to see them all go up and show off their costume. It was cool that everyone got a glow bracelet though. Your girls looked beautiful as always, and I think if you put Abi in her pink Cinderella dress (that the birds made) next year she will win. I have never seen anyone wear that particular Cinderella dress and I can't wait to see it on her. We are actually trick or treating tonight. Jen just told me they trick or treat tonight in their neighborhood. I may let them take a spin around the block tomorrow as well so they can show the neighbor kids their costumes. Shhhh...don't tell!
I won't tell.. we are planning to trick or treat tomorrow. Normally I wouldn't do it on Sunday here because I think it's just weird the way they have done it in the past ..but since tomorrow is actually halloween I have no problem with it. I like to get as much use out of the costumes as possible!
With Abi- I told Doug last night I thought it was really funny that Abi was parading around in hand me down wings sewn to an old t-shirt with her tutu we bought in Utah while at home I had a really cute Cinderella dress and Alice in Wonderland costume just sitting in the closet!
Yay for Al!! When I saw that pic of him my first thought was that he looked EXACTLY like Ralphie (before I read your comment)! He is so cute. Chloe has the best smile ever!! Tell Alyssa she made the prettiest witch I have seen!
I have the total opposite reaction to Dave's facial hair...LOVE when he shaves it!!

Cheryl, I had the same reasoning about Sunday trick or treating this year. When I was a kid, we just went on the 31st, whenever that happened to be. After taking them tonight, I am not sure I am up for 3 days of spray paint hair after all, but we'll see? It is too bad you couldn't use one of those costumes you worked so hard on, but Abi looked cute in her poofy purple tutu, and I totally understand why you are saving the others for Disneyworld. I also liked your little Maddy Mouse.
Val, When I look at that picture of Alex all I see is Ralphie when he climbs up the slide to tell Santa what he wants and then grins his goofy grin, only to be kicked down to the bottom. I am glad to know you saw it too.

As you recall I love Halloween (I won first place at the office - $100!). I will send pics later. I loved dressing you guys up when you were little. Cowboy and Cowgirl were great and the two little snoopys. These are the best cosutmes so far. Alyssa looks very grown up. Alex looked great and there is no one in the world cuter than Chloe. Seth looks younger without the beard, but I have to admit I sort of like it too. Happy Halloween!
I am so impressed with the darling costumes!!!! Way to go Alex, your Clark Kent was awesome! And the butterfly you ended up with was way cuter than the first one you got - Chloe looks darling! And Alyssa as a little witch turned out to be very original and delightful!
Mike shaved to be Waldo this year. I didn't notice it until someone else mentioned it. I don't notice facial features. Ask me color of hair, and I draw a blank. Brent had a full black beard once, and I didn't even notice when he shaved that until I went to kiss him and found smooth skin! Is it possible to be feature dyslexic??

Seriously, what great costumes! Alyssa does make a beautiful witch, and having Alex go as Clark Kent over the superman costume is such a great idea. Of course Chloe looks adorable too! Halloween isn't my favorite holiday in terms of decorations, but I do get just as excited about the kids costumes as they do.

I have been so busy trying to play catch up I dont even know where to start.
FIRST, I LOVED alex's costume. He def deserved to win and when you mentioned the Christmas story costume- HOLY HANNAH, I could totally picture it! Alyssa looked BEAUTIFUL as always, such a pretty witch (is that an oxymoron?) and I literally LOL when I saw what Chloe's costume SHOULD have looked like and what it actually looked like. The new one was MUCH cuter and she was SUCH a cute little butterfly. I am so glad to be back and be able to tell you what an AWESOME mother you are... you do SO much for your kids and family and I just love it. Thanks Julie for all you do :)
