We had a really warm September and Saturday was the first cold day we've had, but you already know that the elements do not keep us from our apples. This week Golden Delicious apples were ripe, my second favorite. Seth found all the big bright yellow ones, and I am making lots of applesauce from the green ones that my kids always insist on picking.
This year, we decided to pick our own pumpkins as well.
Then of course we were off to get donuts, cheese and sausage. Unfortunately our Wisconsin cheese and sausage party didn't last too long when rain joined the icy winds. We packed up and headed home and even made it home just after general conference started. Although, to be honest, I record Saturday sessions to watch on my own. I don't try to get my kids to sit through 8 hours of church. They just have to listen to apostles and the prophet on Sunday.
Here we are, back at the orchard.
The Hawleys, Us, The Sladeks, The VanWagenens. As I look at this I realize that everyone who came this year has either all boys or all girls, except for us. Funny.
We pass a little bakery every year on the way home from apples, and we decided to stop and each pick a treat. Let's see how well you know us. Each of us picked one treat. Who picked what? I realize there are two or three of some items. That happened when Seth liked what someone else picked and wanted to try one too. Oh, and the pretzel bread was for everyone.
In other news...look what we put up this weekend.
We found this at Ikea a few weeks ago and I knew that Chloe needed an indoor swing, to get her through the winter months. It is in the unfinished part of our basement, which also serves as laundry/storage room, so it is our ugly mess room. I will be brave and show it to you anyway because hello, we have a swing. Wheeee!
The rest of the weekend was spent lounging around. I slept A LOT, and I feel pretty good about it. Usually my Sundays are pretty busy, and it felt good to relax. The Hawleys invited us for breakfast, followed by the first session of conference this morning. We barely rolled out of bed in time to make it.
The kids laid still and pretended to watch their required parts of conference. They are supposed to report back on what the prophet talked about. Alyssa listened just long enough to memorize the first story he told, about the 10 lepers. She hurriedly regurgitated it to pass off her conference requirement. Alex said that President Monson talked about what it is like to be the Principal of the church. When we told him that was incorrect, he went with his standard Sunday answer..."he talked about Jesus". Oh well, at least he can identify the "Principal" of the church. I suppose that is better than nothing.

We ended up with a much better day the second time around, huh? Even if it was a bit chilly. The applesauce we made with the goldies was so good. We didn't even have to add any sugar. I want a swing in my house. Except I want it right in the middle of my kitchen so I can swing myself from one task to the next without having to walk or get up;)
That picture of Alyssa standing on the pumpkin is great. That was fun. Abi just loves going there to pick apples. She was so excited to see you too.
Now, I just need to figure out what to do with all of our apples!
Thanks for the invite.
What a fun day! I'm glad it turned a little cold for you, actually. Somehow pumpkins and sleeveless don't quite go together (i.e., Makinzee's post) in my mind. We actually had to celebrate Conference today with a turn in the weather, too. Wind, rain, and a little colder. I think you're doing great with the kids and Conference. It's always a challenge for them. (Still can't figure out why the talks were so so so boring when I was young. I can't get enough of them now.)
We missed the apple picking because of sick-o's and football game. It looks like it was so much fun. Keep us on the list. We want to hang out with the cool people. Maybe we can pull it off next year.
Conference has seen better years with my family. I'm not sure the kids sat through any of conference except Clayton did catch the Priesthood session. One thing we've tried to do in the past is watch a talk every Sunday evening. We've tried to force entire sessions on the kids and it ends with Kjel and I getting nothing but ornery loud kids.
Chloe-butterfly cookie
Al-pumpkin things
Alyssa-choco donut
Julie-choco chip cookie
Seth-eclairs
Those are my guesses...you know I love games like this!
Jen, I actually just packed up my first batch of applesauce, and it smelled and tasted so good that I threw another batch in the crockpot so that the kids can wake up to warm applesauce for breakfast. Yum!
Cheryl, APPLESAUCE...lots of it! I am also planning on apple pie, and apple muffins. I wish my house could smell like apples baking everyday. Thanks for joining us!
Julie, I agree that pumpkin pictures are cuter with sweaters. Thanks for backing me up on conference. I always want to be that mom whose kids sit through all 8 hours and take notes, but one hour of sacrament meeting is hard enough. I want them to know why it is important though, and to become familiar with at least the 12 apostles and the presidency.
LeShel, You are in permanent marker on the list! So sorry you were sick, but we will become real life friends...the kind that actually hang out on purpose and in person. You aren't getting off the list that easy.
Valerie, I will answer you later, in case anyone else cares to play my silly game.
There's something about Pumpkin Patch pictures that are so adorable. Your kids all look so cute, and it looks like a ton of fun.
I agree with Valerie's guesses. I like Alyssa's jacket, did I get that for her? If so I have nice taste after all no matter what Valerie says.
What a cute tradition. Hopefully more people will move in and you can add some more to your crew. I love the indoor swing idea. It already looks cold in your pictures. I bet you are missing summer already. Enjoy the holidays.
Alright Val and Mom, Since only our family is interested in playing name that goodie...you were almost right. Alyssa was the eclair and Seth the donut. I would have guessed the same thing though. Usually Seth can not pass up an eclair, although if you noticed, there were 3 eclairs and he ate two of them. I was the easy one. Always go for the chocolate chip cookie!
