After dropping Chloe off we hurried to make the bus. The BEST part of field trips is the bus ride. If we never even had a destination the kids probably wouldn't mind. They just feel so big riding around on the school bus.
Our super fabulous bus ride landed us at a fun little farm. We have LOTS of farms out here but this was one I hadn't been to before. They had apples, pumpkins, and corn, and animals of course.
We started out with the obligatory hay ride.
Then on to the giant corn box. I love when they use dried corn or soybeans in place of sand. I don't let my kids play in sand. Ick! I also loved that the corn box was in a nice warm greenhouse. Alex dropped down and started making corn angels which started a trend, and soon there were 18 little corn angels on display, and 18 moms with cameras snapping away.

After corn the kids jumped in the hay. Alex was the only one fashion forward enough to do so in a witch's hat.
Next we were off to the "kernel of knowledge" greenhouse where they learned about pumpkins, corn and cabbage. This picture looks a bit silly because I had to erase the classmates, but I am amused by Alex's puzzled face. I have lots of pictures of me wearing that same confused expression.

Back on the bus with a pumpkin and a rice krispie ghost.
Since we all got a "free" pumpkin (with our $25 admission cost) I passed mine on to Alyssa and this is how the pumpkins look now. Notice that Alyssa covered any pigment imperfections with orange paint.

We also brought home a pie. On the bus ride all the moms were telling me that they make the famous brown bag apple pies at the farm we were going to. I watched Throwdown with Bobby Flay once and they were in Wisconsin at The Elegant Farmer where the brown bag apple pie originated. I have been dying to try one ever since. When I heard they had a knock off at the farm, I had to partake. It was still warm. It sat on my lap and warmed my legs all the way home. Look the window on the box is all steamed up. I got home and debated...lunch? pie? lunch? pie? The pie is still warm and lunch isn't even ready yet. Okay, it's gotta be pie.
I will say that the pie was good, but not what I expected. This pie just had a regular crust and was baked in a bag, then moved to a box. The pies at Elegant Farmer had a regular bottom crust and a sugar cookie dough top crust, baked and served in a greasy paper bag. I am such a sucker for creative packaging and I just need to have that pie in a bag. Look at it, isn't it cute?
Who wants to go on a field trip with me and get the real brown bag pie?
Oh well, pie or no pie I had a great day with my little guy.

The best part of fall are those field trips to the pumpkin farm. That apple pie looks so thick and delish! Chloe and I are totally bff's now.
Does brown bag apple pie taste better or different. I've sadly never heard of it.
We are cuckoo for brown bag apple pies in my family. Thanksgiving wouldn't be the same without them. I like to double the streusel topping...and then truthfully eat it the night before Turkey Day. It's better that way when you've not yet a big fat stuffed pig.

Nice that they had actual hay on the hay ride. I have been on so many 'hay rides' here and not one of them has had hay on it!
My sisters in laws make their pies in a brown bag every year on Thanksgiving and I have to say I did not see a difference.. don't know what it's supposed to have done to the pie.

Alex is too cute! I love the picture with the straw hat. He makes a great 'farmer'. Sounds like a fun trip.
