My kids seem to be a great mystery. I have often noticed that when I am with a group of families, at church for example, I can just look at kids and tell you which family they belong to. Most families have a look, but not ours, which is actually kind of funny because more than once Seth and I have been told that we look like each other. Yet we are told often that our kids do not look like us, or like each other, and none of them is a bigger mystery than Chloe.
Alyssa looks like my mom and Seth, Alex like my dad, but Chloe....? If I look really hard I see a little bit of Seth's dad and a little bit of my Grandma Renouf, but even that is only if I strain and use a bit of imagination. She is her own little critter for sure, in looks and in personality. And she is the one who I feel looks NOTHING like me, so it makes me happy to see that I at least shared the same cheesy squinty eyed happy head smile as her when I was a baby. See...
And while I am dragging up old pictures, I think this one looks a bit like Alex.
While Chloe looks nothing like me, I must add that Alex looks NOTHING like Seth. Having kids in our house was like trick or treating. We never knew what would be behind the next door, and I love my little grab bag goblins.

I have always thought your family looks like they all belong together, though. Even if none of you look exactly alike, you do look like family. I love that everyone has their own individual bag of traits. And you do have a beautiful family!
You really do look like Alex in that picture. I have noticed that sometimes I look at Alyssa and see you 100% and other times Seth 100%- it's really interesting.
I love the term "grab bag goblins". That is so cute.
I think we all see different things when we look at kids. I have been so sure that while Abi looks a lot like me, she has mostly Van Wagenen traits but that Maddy was completely me. She looks so much like I did at her age but then when we were at a family party my brother told me she looked exactly like Doug.... so I do find it really interesting how we all see different things when we look at someone.

Randomness alert...nothing to do with blog...I was watching on ABC a thing on one of there 20/20 type shows about a murder...in Pleasant Prairie Wisconson! So I saw a little bit of your home town! Anyway... sorry to highjack this comments...
Cheryl, I also think Alyssa changes all the time. Funny how kids will do that. In that pic of me that looks like Alex I look like my dad and Grandma King but now I think I look more like my mom? Alyssa thinks that pic of me in Kindergarten looks like my sister Valerie? Genetics are bizarre. I think both of your girls look a lot like you but I do see quite a bit of Doug in the Maddy, especially her eyes.
Emily, We saw that 20/20 over the weekend and have actually seen it before. Kind of creepy because the ladies name was Julie Jensen, a little too close. Also did you see the other story that night? A Mormon lady who was possibly murdered by her husband. They kept showing Utah and the San Diego temple where she would go. Too many ties to my own life in that show. I told Seth not to take it as a sign to plan my demise.
I am told ALWAYS that I look like my mom, but it didn't have until I grew up and went through those awkards stages. I'll bet they change and you figure out where they came from. I have a brother with red hair, one with black and me brown. We always joke we are the milk mans, the dog catcher and the bus boy!
I think your family looks like they belong together. I feel like I got a boy and girl version of the same person with my kids. Everyone says they look alike but Luke resembles Dave more and Audrey looks more like me. I think that pic of you def looks like Al and Alyssa.
I am SO anxious to get out there!! Just have to get through work tonight and then I'm one day closer to you and the geeks!
Val, Your kids are definitely made from the same batch of dough and I can't wait to see both of their yummy faces. It is after midnight which means you will officially be here tomorrow! We are SO excited. Alex can not contain his enthusiasm and Alyssa about jumped out of her skin when I ended my phone call with you by saying, "see you in 5 minutes". I felt bad when I had to explain that I was exaggerrating. So close though....We will be busy tomorrow, still gotta find a good puzzle to work on, and a b-day present for Audrey and something Angry Birds for Luke, and probably for Alex who is now dying to be VP of Luke's AB fan club.
Your family is adorable! It's funny that your kids all have a unique look. That picture of you does look a lot like Alex.
One of the FIRST things I hear is how similar all my kids look. It is pretty strange how similar they look. Everyone says they look like Mark. Occasionally they'll say that Brooklynne looks like me, but sometimes she even looks like Mark. It's strange-like walking around with little mini-clones. :)
I'm going to have to respectfully disagree with you. Your kids definitely do have unique looks to each other, but I see you and Seth in all of them. There were several times when I've glimpsed Alyssa and totally saw a mini version of you. Her expressions, smiles, whatever...you're in there. Alex really does look like you, and after seeing that childhood picture of you I can definitely confirm that he's got more of you than Seth in him. You are mystified by Chloe, and I agree that she doesn't outright look like you or Seth, but again I see bits of both of you. What I noticed most about Chloe is that many times I would see Alyssa in her. I can't explain it, but those two are definitely sisters.
