My friend Cheryl is doing her own version of the Just Ask Julie posts that I did earlier this year. I asked her lots of questions and here is the question she had for me.
Cheryl Asked: Julie- you have talked about how you don't watch movies because you have a hard time sitting through them. I'm wondering, are there any movies that you like so much you can sit through them? Do you have a favorite movie?
While I am not generally a movie fan, I did have a few good couch potato years in my childhood.
During summertime while my mom was at work, if we weren't with my grandparents, we were with a teenage babysitter. Then, when we were old enough, we just stayed home alone. We would get up and watch Summer School, Overboard, Don't Tell Mom the Babysitter's Dead, Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure, Can't Buy Me Love and Revenge of the Nerds over and over again. I know Revenge of the Nerds is not a kids show, but I have told you before that we played by a different set of rules at our house. At Alyssa's 5th birthday party, my brother's friend, Travis, joked that she was getting pretty old and should have her first Nerds viewing. Don't worry, I didn't allow it but we all had a good laugh about that.
I went to the movies a lot in college too, but at some point I realized that I only liked to go to the $1 theater and only with my friend Michelle because she would talk to me during the movie. Otherwise, I drift off into la-la land or fall asleep. I used to fall asleep on dates to the movies sometimes.
Watching movies at home is hard because I get distracted and wander off. The other night Seth rented a movie from Redbox that I didn't care to see so I stayed upstairs and watched a different movie. 27 Dresses was on TV and I turned on just the last 20 minutes. It was enough to pretty much gather what the whole show had been about without wasting 2 hours watching it. It is funny that I can sit and read a book for hours, but I can't get through a movie. Reading is more engaging, and if I have spare time I would rather read.
I can't think of too many recent movies that I have even sat through, but over the years I have managed to collect a few favorites.
Grease was my first favorite, and I still love it. I also like Shawshank Redemption. I like Pretty Woman and Dirty Dancing. I love Defending Your Life. Seth is not that amused by it, but my parents and siblings agree that it is hilarious. My favorite recent-ish movie is Titanic...Okay so it wasn't that recent but I really haven't seen anything I really liked in about a decade. Titanic came out right before my mission. Me and Seth went to see it and when they announced that it was 3 1/2 hours, I almost got up and left. Since I have always loved all things Titanic, I stayed and bawled and went back to see it 6 more times. So cheesy, but I love the song from it too. I felt like it was written for me and Seth since we were parting ways for a couple years. I even framed the words to it for Seth and he took it on his mission. That frame is still on his dresser to this day. Embarrassing, I know.
Oh, and I like School of Rock. I always laugh at that one and I think that was actually in the last decade? I don't sit and watch it in it's entirety though, just a few minutes here and there whenever it is on.
My favorite movies are old movies. I like movies made from classic plays. I like movies without all the modern special effects. The actors had to actually know how to act and it feels more like watching a play to me. I love Cat on a Hot Tin Roof and A Streetcar Named Desire. Tennessee Williams is the play writing equivalent of John Steinbeck. I also love Gaslight. I like Rebecca, although that is from a book and not a play. Good book though, and a good movie. And my favorite old movie is Pygmalion.
So yes, there are a few movies I will sit through, but I haven't seen a movie trailer that caught my eye in a really long time. A few times a year I sit and watch a movie with Seth but I usually fall asleep or end up underwhelmed. I am pretty over Hollywood, and everyone in it by now.
*Update: This morning my mom sent this picture. My brother just turned 21. For his birthday, my sister Valerie framed this picture of the "nerds" and cropped in Steven's head, as well as two of his buddies. I have pointed them out with green arrows. My brother is the one in the middle. The one with the pink arrow is Poindexter. Nerdiest of the nerdy, and the one my family compares to me. Thanks guys!

Interesting. I like the movies you like too.. except Defending your life. I haven't heard of that.
Funny how you could sit through Titanic 7 times! That movie made me weep when I saw it in the theater. I felt like such a dork.
While I am quite the movie buff and we watch movies A LOT, I agree with you about the older movies. There are many I love but not many actors/actresses nowadays can hold a candle to the ones from the black and white days.(In my opinion)
Thanks for answering!
I love all the old movies too...especially Roman Holiday! I can't stand going to movie theater either, which sucks because I really want to see Inception right now!
I was cracking up when I heard Jeff and Steven gave everyone a Nerds character and you go Poindexter!! Every time I see his spazzy face now, I crack up thinking of you!!
Cheryl, Watch Defending your Life and let me know what you think. Black and whites are the best for sure. Thanks for giving me something new to post about.
Val, Seth saw Inception. He said it was okay, but not as good as everyone is giving it credit for. I don't so much appreciate the Poindexter reference. First Cloris Leachman and now this. Can I ever get a flattering pick? Kelly thought I should be Lamar because I can rock the nerds anthem so well....Clap your hands everybody....BUT at least I am not Booger, you earned that one. Who was Jeff? Takashi?
I am proud of my Booger status. No, Kristen is Takashi because that is Booger's #1 roll dog. Jeff and Steven made themselves Lois and Gilbert. Lamar is the hot ticket I guess because Dave wanted to be him too, but Kelly got him already. We told Dave he had to be the coach.
You forgot to mention the time I kidnapped you and mad you sit through the first Twilight. I know you loved it!
I really prefer old movies and mostly musicals. My favs are seven brides for seven brothers and singing in the rain. Andy has even decided he loves them.
But for new, I like Mama Mia.
I see a dorky trend emerging here.
We have boxes and boxes of DVD's - the concept that 'after you pay for the movie and then for the popcorn, a DVD (and even a BluRay) is cheaper than the theater' has bit us, so if we want to see something, usually we just buy it.
And then put it in a box with all the other movies we've never got around to watching. Or loan it to the kids or grandchildren (because so many of them are cartoons) and visit it occasionally at their homes.
But I really do love movies. And enjoy most everything we see in the theater. I love popcorn. And the big screen and big sound and popcorn and dark room just don't happen at home, I don't care how much cheaper the DVD is!
Wow, there I went again - a tangent about me. Sorry. It surprised me that you don't like to go to movies. Not sure why, but I kind of would have guessed you to be a 'give me a good movie' kind of person. Maybe there just aren't enough good movies.
OK, we may have had a different set of rules but just know "I did the best I can" and if you allow me to move forward just know I'll do the best I can, I'll work hard and I'll do . . . the best I can.
Ha,Ha Mom! I wish I could think of a witty Bob Diamond line in response. No one feel sorry for my mom. She was just quoting Daniel Miller, from Defending your Life.
Disclaimer: I do not endorse Nerds for public viewing, but I strongly endorse Defending Your Life.
Bob Diamond quote, "Maybe he didn't want to"
I thought about "I love watching this guy" or my favorite Bob Diamond line about being the "stupid guy who lost the garden hose". That is a great show! I was laughing about it last night after posting it. I better go rent it.
Defending Your Life is an excellent movie that I just watched again a few months ago, but I understand it's not everyone's humor. I have fond memories of watching Overboard and Valley Girl with you guys.
If you like movies that seem like plays, you might like Sunset Boulevard - which was later made into a play. Also All About Eve was good in this category. Both of them are old movies, definitely classics and are character driven.
It'd be interesting to see or create a list of essential movie viewing - sort of like essential books.
I also wonder if you would like Amadeus.
love the picture. That's hilarious.
Ask Seth about Tremors--the kids watched it a lot! Sort of a cult thing with them.
I'm once again the opposite of you and LOVE to watch movies. It's almost an illness even sitting through horrible movies just because I have to finish it. I think I've seen every single movie you listed except Gaslight. I went through a phase where I loved black and white movies, too. Mike hates them, so I rarely will catch one anymore unless there's the scarce moment where I find myself in front of the t.v. by myself and a good b/w is on (probably never gonna happen again).
My family was a huge movie watching family. We even have this annoying habit of listing the other movies that the actors were in while watching movies. My family would watch whatever the heck they would grab first at the rental place or what was on t.v., so we saw a lot of obscure crap. They also would go to just about every new movie out in the theaters on a Friday/Saturday night. I usually got dragged along even as a little kid (even to scary and nudey movies...hey, I didn't grow up Mormon or even religious). Now you why I rocked at that pop culture game that Jared had in the Dells...LOL.
I remember you mentioning Defending Your LIfe one day, and I didn't think I had seen or heard of it. It didn't take me long to realize that I had seen it and actually remember lots of bits from it. I think my mom liked it, and we may have watched it a couple of times together.
Mike and I have a lot of movies that we've seen together a ton of times and now quote regularly. The 'Burbs and Overboard are two I can think of quickly. Overboard was a surprise to us that we liked it and that it's so quotably funny. Now that we've got 3 kids though we don't seem to watch many movies anymore. The only t.v. we get to watch anymore is just a couple of shows "Burn Notice" and "Psych" and of course our Dallas episodes;)
All right Julie. I looked up Defending Your Life on netflix last night and it just happened to be one of the ones you can watch instantly through the playstation so.. I watched it.
Yeah, that was funny! It was kind of late and I may have been loopy but the part where they were seeing their past lives and he was running... I was laughing so hard. Doug fell asleep on the couch and then went to bed before it was over so I don't think he was as amused as I was.. but he did laugh a few times when he was paying attention.
Thanks for the recommendation!
Oh and after reading Jen's comment... my family does the "what else were they in?" thing too.
WAtching revenge of the nerds right now. Heeeh heeeh heeeh
